Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Anesthesia is a bachelor programme aimed at developing health care professionals competent to provide anesthesia to patients.
Anaesthetists are specialist doctors responsible for providing anesthesia to patients during operations and medical procedures. In the operation theatre, the anesthetist administers the anesthesia according to the condition of the individual patient and remains with them throughout the operation to monitor the effects of the anesthesia and the surgery, such as the heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. They also support in relieving pain to ensure that patients are comfortable immediately after the operation.
The curriculum also includes training in intensive care medicine. Some anaesthetists choose to specialize in caring for specific pains including pain during childbirth and even long term pain problems.
Anesthetists are mainly employed by anesthetic departments, specialty clinics, emergency departments and intensive care units (ICU).
